15 novembre 2010

Within one year, NATO may hand over security control of twelve Afghan provinces to the Afghan security forces. According to information obtained by “Lettera22”, the list of the twelve was submitted to European partners by NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Kabul, Mark Sedwill, during the preparatory meetings for the NATO Lisbon Summit to be held on 19 November.

Lettera22 , which refers to the content of an internal memo circulated within one of the Alliance’s member States also in the daily newspaper “Il Riformista“, reports that the list includes two groups of provinces over which NATO and ANA (Afghan National Army) have come to an agreement. The first group of provinces (Bamyian, Badakhshan,  Daykundi,  Panjshir, Samangan,  Sari Pul and  Kabul) will be handed over to Afghan control within six months; while for Herat, Faryab, Laghman, Parwan and Takhar security handover will occur within 12 months.
